CLEAN WATER FOR ALLTwo BoreholesCOMPLETEDNow onto Number 3!The first borehole in Ibo Town IS FINISHED and flowing with clean fresh water! The second will be completed before the month is out, and the start of the dry season. Vulnerable children are most at risk when water is scarce and contaminated, but adults already weak with malaria, can easily be brought down by waterborne diseases too. Build a Borehole was conceived in August 2011, after the death of Deputy Head Teacher Francis John from contaminated water. We were asked by the desperate people of Ibo Town for urgent help to stop more lives being lost. Of course we said yes, but we wondered how on earth we could achieve the construction of even one borehole without any funds, land or expertise! Fortunately, there are many people who wanted to help. Land to house the wells was given for free by Rosetta Kargbo and Sarah George members of the Ibo Town Women’s Committee. They will look after the pumps and ensure that the entire community has access to fresh water everyday. We then approached Willamette Medical Teams of Oregon. who have years of experience in water projects in Sierra Leone. They were delighted to start building as soon as the rainy season stopped in September. All we had to do was raise the funds from our friends and community which did not take long. Sponsorship for Borehole#1, named Orville was given immediately by David Sarles of Orvilles Appliance in Western New York. Borehole #2 named Marlow was the result of a community fundraising effort by ‘Marlow Parents’ and Marlow C of E Primary School in Buckinghamshire UK and The Build on Books team. Now, we are teaming up with Willamette Medical Teams to build more boreholes. Borehole #3 is planned for St Clements Schools and Orphanage in Kwame. Can you help raise funds for a third borehole, or even a fourth? The cost is less than £3,000. If we all raise a bit, we can do it together! We will soon be launching our ‘Count your Taps Campaign’ to schools and asking a small donation for each tap. You will be amazed how many places you can get a drink of water in your home. Clean water is vital for life! |

I am pleased to say, that the girls of St Joseph’s Girls Vocational Secondary School in Moyamba will receive a complete library of over 2,000 books with every type of they could need. Many of the girls arrive from villages never having a had a book of their own. They have no books in their homes and their parents cannot afford to buy them the text books they need for school. Often they have to catch up on their reading skills before they can even begin to learn science and maths and all the other subjects. To help we also included a basic primary reading scheme along with text books, dictionaries, encyclopaedias and reading books. Through their UK partners schools, teachers will be sent from the remote town of Moyamba to Freetown or Bo to be trained in Basic Librarianship by the Sierra Leone Library Board. This will also be the case at Dorcas Primary and SDA Primary schools in Bo. Both are linked through the British Council with schools in Devon. Their friends and partner schools raise the funds so they could build one library and renovate another. Build on Books was asked to fill the libraries with lovely colourful books of all types. We estimated that about 3,000 would be needed. Primary school books are always a joy to pack, as it is easy to envisage the children's delight when they first set eyes on them. Having been involved in sending over a third of a million books to Sierra Leone, over the past three years, I know how much joy they bring and how much they help children learn to read. The little pikins (children) will think all their Christmas came at once when they see all the books. Many were given by UK schools and parents and are of the highest quality. The books are recycled but most look brand new. The children who attend schools with books from Build on Books will have a head start in life because they have the tools to read and learn. It costs about £500 to send a library on a pallet. The students of Reading Blue Coat School provided funding for this shipment. It sounds like the fundraising events organised by the students were brilliant fun and a huge success. Well done everyone. If we all help a bit, we can change the world together!
